Under "Timeline", find out what happened:

7. Under "Maps and Battles" describe what was happening on the Western Front using the animated map.
8. Go to "Photos of the Great War" and "Animals at War" select 3 pictures. Tell me what you found.
9. Under "Heads of State", pick one person you found there.
10. Under the site"Aerodrome", describe what an "Ace" is?

President Wilson Neutrality Notes:
President Wilson did not necessarily want us to go to war in 1917. Below are some reasons why he did not want to and there are other reasons that forced him into going in to World War 1.
I.America Was a “Melting Pot” of Nations
-Wilson didn’t want to see the war set Americans against each other
-Unless our nation’s interests were directly threatened, we wanted no part of it
A.Americans Have Divided Loyalties
a.Many American supported the nations where they were born i.German Americans ii.Irish Americans
b.Most Americans sided with Britain and France i.Both had strong historical tied with the U.S.
B.American Opinion Crystallizes
a.German invasion of neutral Belgium swayed the U.S. opinion i.Belgium was neutral
b.3 DISTINCT POINTS ON THE WAR i.isolationists- believed the war was none of U.S’s business ii.interventionists- believed the war affected U.S interest and that the U.S. should intervene on the side of the Allies iii.internationalists- believed the U.S. should play an active role in world affairs and work toward achieving piece but NOT enter the war
II.Neutrality Gives Way to War
A. Britain Blockades Germany a.British leaders blockaded Germany b.Law allows contraband to be confiscated legally by any belligerent nation i.Contraband: goods such as weapons and other articles used to fight a war c.British army took virtually every product
B. German Submarine Violates Neutral Rights a.February 1915 Germany began sinking Allied ships with U-boats b.U-boats = Submarines
c.Germans sunk British passenger liner Lusitania off the coast of Ireland d.Sussex Pledge – Germany pledged not to sink unarmed ships
C.Wilson Prepares for War
a.1916 Congress passed two pieces of legislation to prepare for war i.The National Defense Act – expanded the size of the army ii.Naval Construction Act – ordered for the building for more ships
D.America Enters the War
a.1917 two events took place that pushed the U.S. into war i.Zimmerman Note 1.German prime minister proposed an allegiance with Mexico 2.after a German victory Mexico would get back TX, NM, AZ ii.Germany announced unrestricted submarine warfare against Britain
